WHERE IS THE LIBRARY IN THE CAMPUS?
The
library is at the very bottom of the corridor, on your left. It also gives you
access to the corriputer lab.
In these two working spaces, it Is absolutely forbidden to eat, drink or smoke.
Silence should be respected and group studies should be conducted in the group
study room.
WHO CAN GO AND STUDY IN THE LIBRARY?
The library is open to all alumni and present Schiller students, to faculty and administration. None outside the school has the right to come in the library and use its properties.
WHO WORKS IN THE LIBRARY?
The
librarian is here everyday to help you in your researches.
Several students also work in the library : a schedule is posted on the library's
door to indicate who is working when. Do not forget that these assistants are
students and that they are here to work and not to socialize.
WHAT RESOURCES CAN I FIND IN THE LIBRARY? HOW CAN I FIND THEM?
You can find information in the library thanks to three different media: books, periodicals and the Internet (concerning the Internet, see special information).
1 - There are over 5,000 books in the library, arranged according to the Dewey
Decimal System (the number, or call number, that you can see at the bottom of
the binding), which is a way to class documents according to a common theme;
example: all the books on business will be together, as will all the books on
marketing, etc.
To find the title you are interested in the fastest way is to look it up in the card catalog ( on your left when you come in ): you can look up by subject, by author or by title. Once you have found your title, write down its call number which appears on the left of the catalog card and which enable you to search on the shelf. If you have trouble finding it, ask for the help of the librarian or of one the assistants.
2.
The library also receives three daily papers, the International Herald Tribune,
the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times (you can ask for them at the
circulation desk), as well as many periodicals : see list for titles. All of
them are kept in the library since there is only one copy of each title. Please
don't take any to the study group room or to your house. This also prevents
losses and damages
To do a research, it is not necessary to go through all the issues of a magazine
to find the article you want : the library also subscribes to the Business Periodical
Index and the Economist Index, which list, according to subject, all the articles
that have been published.
The Facts on File, located on the Reference shelf, offers the same kind of help
to a research, with a slightly different method.
Archives of periodicals are also kept in the reading room.
3. An access to the Internet is available on a computer located in the library (see more information on the Internet).
WHAT BOOKS CAN I BORROW FROM THE LIBRARY:
HOW LONG - HOW MANY ?
Let's try to be brief and concise about the subject ! There are three kinds of books in the library:
1. Regular books can be loaned for a maximum of 2 weeks. Four books can be borrowed at a time, not more. If those books are not returned on time, the student will be fined 5FF per day. Students will not be able to borrow books until the fine is paid.
2. The reference books (which are dictionaries, encyclopedias, and other formal statistic or data books) are NOT for home use: they are located on the wall on your right when you come in. You will recognize them by the R preceding their call number.
2.
The "reserve" books are textbooks that you will find behind the circulation
desk. They are organized according to title of the different courses and then
by alphabetical order.
Example : International Marketing, by Philip R. Cateora is under BA 322 for
International Marketing.
Those books can be borrowed for two hours during the day, taken home for the
night from 5 o'clock and returned the next day at 11 am or on the Monday if
the book was checked out on a Friday night. Students who are late giving their
books back are fined 5 FF an hour. To help you find your textbooks, the syllabi
of the different courses are on the desk
Are also put on reserve recommended readings at the request of your professors
(articles, chapters...)
Theses of alumni, which call number begins with "T" are also kept
in the library : ask the librarian for her help.
SERVICES OF THE CIRCULATION DESK
The circulation desk is a pole in the library and it might be useful to recapitulate its services !
This
is the place to go to have your books checked in or out: the librarian assistant
will write your name and the date on the book's card and stamp the book with
the return date and where:
- you can ask for the daily papers
- you can ask for copies of past exams and for recommended readings
-you can leave your bookbag
- games can be borrowed and taken out to the students lounge
OTHER SERVICES IN THE LIBRARY
-The photocopier: photocopy cards are on sale at the price of 10 € for a hundred copies. Ask the librarian.
-Floppy discs can also be bought from the librarian for 2 €.

The computer Lab, has 8 computers, all equipped with Windows
95 or Windows 98 and with several software: Word 6 or 97, Excel.5 or 97, Powerpoint
and Access. There is one black/white printer and one in color.
RULES
OF LIFE IN THE LAB.
- The computer lab. is a working space, therefore students may not eat, drink
or smoke in it.
- Silence should be respected so that everyone can concentrate on their work.
- Working on floppy discs
Students should work on diskette and not save on the hardware. You can buy a
disc from the librarian ): to save problems and losing documents, students should
never work on C drive. Any document saved on C drive may be lost since the librarian
and the computer assistants periodically clean this drive.
-Virus check
Each time you start working on a computer, please do a virus check or your floppy
disc with the anti-virus. In December 1997, 45 viruses have been detected on
the computers...lf students want to improve the work conditions in the computer
lab, and not take the risk of losing a 30-pages document the day before due
date (this has already happened...) PLEASE MAKE IT A HABIT TO DO AN ANTI-VIRUS
CHECK. It takes two minutes!
If you don't know how to do it, read the instructions tapped on the computer
or ask one the computer assistants to show you. Try to learn from what he/she
shows you and not only have him/her do it for you.
